McDonald’s leaving Ala Moana Center after nearly 50 years

Local News

After nearly five decades of selling hamburgers, french fries and shakes, McDonald’s is saying goodbye to Ala Moana Center.

The company announced Wednesday that the location inside the state’s largest shopping mall will close Dec. 20.

The company decided not to renew its lease with Ala Moana, but did not offer specifics.

McDonald’s says there will be no layoffs. The store’s 28 workers will be offered jobs at other locations.

People we spoke with had mixed reactions to the news.

“That was super disappointing. I live right across the street and I go there to occasionally get a quick bite,” said Ryan Montgomery. “It’s really convenient and it’s good food.”

“I’m not too surprised,” said Lance Terai. “Prices are high, higher than other McDonald’s. The lease is high. All the other stores there are closed out. It’s not a surprise to me.”

McDonald’s has been at Ala Moana Center since 1970.
