Maui County has a new tool to help beach-goers stay safe in the water.
A comprehensive Ocean Safety Guide is now available online and offers important safety information, including a map of county beach parks that have lifeguards, as well as tips on how to deal with rip currents and shore breaks, and how to avoid chance encounters with sharks.
The brochure resulted from a collaboration among the Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation’s Ocean Safety Division, the Department of Fire and Public Safety, the Maui Police Department, the State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and the U.S. Coast Guard.
“The beaches of Maui County are beautiful but not without dangers, as with any natural habitat,” said Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa. “Most of our residents have learned how to respect the power of the ocean and hopefully we can educate our visitors do the same. We encourage everyone to download and share this new safety guide to help communicate these important safety messages to all beach-goers.”
Molokai- and Lanai-specific brochures are also in the works.
Maui County is encouraging schools, service groups, non-profits and other organizations to distribute the safety guide for educational purposes.
The guide can be viewed and downloaded online here.
