Maui County ending abandoned vehicle auctions

Local News

Maui County is suspending abandoned vehicle auctions, indefinitely.

Officials say last year, the auctions were getting more expensive than the revenue generated.

KHON2 News checked with the City and County of Honolulu and learned that abandoned vehicle auctions will continue on Oahu.

The city has also made progress on getting rid of vehicles previously owned by military service members.

In the past, hundreds of these abandoned vehicles took up space in the tow yards.

With the help of the military and a database that tracked where the abandoned vehicles were found, the city has been able to remove those cars without violating the service of members rights.

Last year the city picked up 3,600 cars.

So far this year, they have collected 1,500 abandoned vehicles.

The city is asking residents who sell their cars to make sure the new owner changes the registration so they can easily be tracked.
