Kauai police captured a wanted fugitive considered dangerous in Kilauea Wednesday night following a week-long search.

Ray “Kuna” Harada, 43, of Kapaa, was wanted on two bench warrants when police attempted to arrest him last week Tuesday off a dirt trail at the end of North Waiakulua Road in Kilauea.

Harada assaulted and injured officers when they attempted to arrest him. The officers deployed a Taser to assist in detaining Harada, but he was able to escape and fled the scene on foot.

Police issued a notice to the public over the weekend requesting information on Harada’s possible whereabouts, which led them to Wailapa Road in Kilauea Wednesday evening.

Officers located Harada at around 8:30 p.m. near Kahili Beach, also known as Rock Quarry Beach. Harada again assaulted the arresting officer and attempted to escape. Following a struggle, police successfully detained Harada.

He was arrested on multiple offenses relating to Assault, Resisting Arrest, Escape, and Criminal Contempt of Court.

Harada is now being held at the Kauai Community Correctional Center in lieu of bail of $500,000. His initial court appearance has not yet been scheduled.

One of the officers involved in Wednesday’s arrest suffered a non-life threatening injury. The officer was treated by paramedics at the scene and released.
