At this time next year, West Oahu residents will have a new shopping option.
Ka Makana Alii is a new shopping mall currently under construction in Kapolei.
The project has come a long way since breaking ground in March.
We got a hard hat tour of the site Tuesday, and the steel frame is already up.
“The bones of the buildings are up as you can see. It’s an exciting part. We’re sort of halfway there,” said Edward Kobel, DeBartolo Development president and CEO. “Next year at this time we’ll be full of shoppers, full of retailers and this project was really designed with the local customer in mind.”
The mall is being built on 67 acres of land leased from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, and will feature more than 150 shops and restaurants, and the hotel Hampton Inn & Suites.
“We’ve always been responding to the local needs and interests of kamaaina as well as the business traveler to provide something convenient at the price point that gets them,” said Rich Hartline, DeBartolo Development vice president. “On the mainland, there are shopping centers that way and here in Hawaii the hotel guests working by a mixed-use project, there’s a lot of synergy to the two, so we’re super excited for that.”
The mall is scheduled to open in fall of 2016 and the developer says construction remains on-schedule.
It will be anchored by Macy’s. So far, there are 22 confirmed tenants, including H&M, Forever 21, Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works, California Pizza Kitchen, Cinnabon, Gloria Jean’s Coffee, and Consolidated Theatres.
