Improvements coming to dozens of playgrounds, parks by year’s end

At Pohakupu Mini Park in Kailua, a small crew is working hard so children can play harder.

“This is progress. We’re putting in a new playground every week for the next 15 weeks and they’re scheduling a bunch more playgrounds for next year,” said Troy Vickery of Goto Construction.

The company has been contracted by the city to refurbish 15 playgrounds across Oahu, and they’re hoping to bring a new one online every week.

The playgrounds are made with modular stainless steel components that are durable and guaranteed for 20 years.

“It’s designed for kids to climb on, pull up their bodies because Americans lost their upper body strength. That’s the whole concept behind this product,” Vickery explained.

Below each new playground lies the latest and greatest padding.

“Hawaii has the most stringent testing for drop standards there is and this product is definitely passing that mark,” Vickery said.

It’s not only durable, but good for the environment, because it’s made from old tires that would otherwise wind up in a dump or worse.

“They grind up tires, recycle them, get all the metal out of them, wash it thoroughly and put new glue products in it and put it back together again,” Vickery said.

Mailinh Frasearelli says her twin boys are “really excited.” The double dose of high energy, along with mom, have been patiently monitoring the progress.

“The old playground set really needed a lot of repair and they took it down and they’re building something really great for the kids to play on,” Frasearelli said.

Pohakupu Mini Park is the third on this team’s list after the completion of Palolo Valley and Kalaheo parks, and hopefully coming soon to a park near you.

Vickery says seeing their smiles is the ultimate compensation.

“Jake (a member of my team) gets a little teary-eyed when people come up and say, ‘Can we play? Can we play? Can we play yet?’ And that’s definitely a reward for us,” he said.

“It’s a great park. It would be used more if we had facilities that were safe for the children, so I’m super excited that something’s coming up,” said Frasearelli.Click here for the city’s ongoing park plans and updates.
