Honolulu City Council votes to override veto on increased property tax

The Honolulu City Council unanimously voted on Tuesday, to override the mayor’s veto of a bill that increases real property tax exemption.

The council adopted the measure last month, but Mayor Caldwell vetoed it last week. 

The bill increases the basic property tax exemption from $80,000 to $100,000 for home owners who live in their home. 

The senior exemption increases from $120,000 to $140,000. 

The change takes effect in 2020.
