The Honolulu Fire Dept. responded to a two-alarm house fire in Kalihi Friday morning.
At 9:45 a.m., nine companies staffed with 31 personnel responded to the call of a fire at 1506 Bernice Street.
The first unit arrived three minutes later to find a two-story, single-family dwelling with smoke and flames emanating from a ground-floor window.
“I was washing my car and saw the smoke coming out the window. I tried to go in there and look for somebody, if somebody was there, but I didn’t hear anything. The smoke is really strong so I just ran out and came back here,” said neighbor Gerry Amoguis.
The fire was brought under control at 9:58 a.m. and fully extinguished by 10:05 a.m.
The fire was contained to one bedroom, officials said.
An 81-year-old woman was home at the time of the fire. According to the battalion chief on scene, “one of the neighbors pulled her out of the building initially so I’m not quite sure where she was but according to the neighbor she is normally on the first floor.”
She was treated and transported by EMS for smoke inhalation.
The fire remains under investigation. The cause of the fire and damage estimate is not available at this time.
