Residents from Kona and Laupahoehoe on Hawaii Island, to Makiki on Oahu have reported feeling an earthquake.
The USGS reports that the 5.21 magnitude quake happened on the Kona coast of Hawaii Island, about 20 kilometers east of Kalaoa. It was reported about 5:09 p.m. Three aftershocks were recorded within an hour of the earthquake, including a magnitude-3.0 event approximately 11 minutes following the mainshock. Additional aftershocks are expected.
The Hawaii County Civil Defense reports that there is no tsunami threat. However, there have been some reports of damage:
- Large boulder on Highway 19-Queen Kaahumanu at the Hapuna Junction
- Rock fall Highway 11 near mile 100 and 110.
- HELCO crews are working on restoring power to the Waikoloa area.
The Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory reports no activity or change in status of the volcanoes on Hawaii Island.
