Court documents says a witness connected the suspect to a Kailua murder

Local News

Court documents reveal that it was an anonymous tip that led police to 38-year-old Keone Labatad — a suspect involved in a Kailua murder case.

He appeared in court on Friday morning, May 31.

A witness came forward to say that they had seen him beating Awong with a gun at a Kaneohe home on May 10.

The witness says Awong was bound at the time, and then dragged into an awaiting vehicle.

But Labatad has only been charged with kidnapping — which was filed on Thursday, May 30, according to HPD officials.

Thirty-eight-year-old Benjamin Awong’s body was discovered on May 15, on the side of a mountain trail near the intersection of Aleka Place and Old Kalanianaole Highway in Kailua.

Awong’s body was found bound in tape.

Labatad is being held on $500,000 bail.
