The Honolulu Bulky Item Pilot Project begins Monday, June 2, and will run through January 2020.
The project requires Honolulu residents from Foster Village to Hawaii Kai to make an appointment for their oversized items to be picked up.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell says the city already has 862 reservations scheduled.
Caldwell is urging the public to follow the rules so the city can continue to offer the service.
“If we can’t get a handle on it–getting the folks the citizens of this community to respect it, perhaps we shouldn’t do bulky item pick up at all, and we should step back and let the private sector do it just like it’s done many other cities around the country,” said the mayor.
Caldwell says he believes the project can work to reduce rubbish along roadsides.
