Big Island Update: Highway closure, weather advisories, and power restoration

Honolulu (KHON2) - The National Weather Service High Surf Advisory for north and east facing shores, and the High Wind Warning for Hawai`i Island summits remain in effect.

Due to high winds and surf impacts, the following are in effect:

  • HELCO reports power restoration continues; about 270 customers remain without power.  Highway 19 between the 38 and 39 mile markers will be restricted to a single lane of traffic from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm today to facilitate repairs.  Please drive with caution.
  • Beach Parks are open.  Exercise caution along shorelines and beaches.

Major Closures include:

  • Bayfront Highway

The Department of Water Supply has restored water services to the Honokaa Area.  Vehicle Registration and Driver’s License services are open in Waimea and the West Hawaii Civil Center.
