The man accused of kidnapping a UH student and holding her against her will was indicted on Wednesday. Added to the list of charges against Austin Joseph were five counts of sex assault, identity theft, robbery, theft and car theft. He was charged with kidnapping and unauthorized use of a credit card on Saturday, April 13.
He remains held on $1 million bail.
Joseph is accused of kidnapping a university student who stopped to inspect her car after she hit a rock along Kalanianaole Highway on the night of Wednesday, April 3. She was held overnight and released the following morning.
The case shook the community when it hit social media after the victim’s friend reached out for help. He was on the phone with her when she stopped to inspect her car. He related that he heard an unknown male’s voice tell her she was being robbed then the line went dead. He was not able to reach her again that night.
Police arrested Joseph on Thursday, April 11 after a week-long manhunt.
