The Aina Haina Library has been closed for almost a year now since just after the historic flooding. But it is making progress on reopening. Dozens of volunteers are helping to unpack about 1700 boxes filled with more than 68,000 books. Last April, flood waters came rushing through both sides of the building.

Luckily the carpet absorbed a lot of the waters so we didn’t have very many books that were damaged, but it did ruin some of the furniture so we got some replacement furniture as well, said Mallory Fujitani, Special Assistant to State Librarian.

Along with fixing what was damaged, they also renovated the bathrooms. They don’t have a firm date yet on when they’ll reopen.
