Large tree crushes vehicle at University area park

A large tree came crashing down onto a vehicle Friday afternoon at Kanewai Community Park on Dole Street.

The incident happened at 4:09 p.m. One Honolulu Fire Department unit arrived at 4:20 p.m.

Fire officials cut the large tree to clear the center lane of the parking lot.

A witness was parked next to the car as the tree came crashing down. She tells KHON2 she heard the tree slowly cracking as it crashed onto the top of the car.

The front windshield, car roof, and back driver window were damaged.

The witness says luckily no one was hurt. She says the man driving the car dropped off kids for basketball practice just minutes before. When he got back to the car, the tree had already fallen.

Firefighters trimmed parts of the tree, and the city tells us crews from the Division of Urban Forestry will remove it.

There’s no word yet on what caused the tree to come crashing down.
