The popular Lanikai “Pillbox” trail will close for two months as the state makes repairs to the crumbling World War II-era structures.
The closure begins on Wednesday, March 28 and is slated to last 60 days.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources says the work consists of concrete spall repair, and removal and replacement of rusted steel roof supports. New steel flange roof supports will be installed.
The project cost is $248,228.
The DLNR says with widespread advertising online and attention on social media, the trail is “being loved to death.” A consulting firm has been contracted to develop a master plan for the trial. It’s currently conducting a survey to get input from the public.
