University of Hawai’i setter Norene Iosia (Torrance, Calif./Redondo Beach, Calif.) led her team to a 2-0 start on the road to open conference play to claim her first Big West Women’s Volleyball Freshman Player of the Week accolade.
Iosia averaged 13.29 assists, 2.86 digs and 0.43 service aces per set as the Rainbow Wahine swept UC Santa Barbara and toppled Cal Poly in four this past weekend.
Iosia guided an efficient UH attack in the win over the Gauchos as the Rainbow Wahine outhit their opponent .382-to-.112. She dished out 35 assists to go along with eight digs, two aces and a block.
Against the Mustangs, she dished out a career-high 58 assists (14.50 aps) while posting her team-high sixth double-double with 12 digs. She completed the all-around effort with two block assists and an ace. Iosia orchestrated a balanced attack as four different Rainbow Wahine hitters amassed double-digits in kills for the second time this season.
Overall, Iosia has started 10 matches and is averaging 11.1 assists per set and 458 total assists. She ranks second in the league behind teammate Nikki Taylor with 0.51 aces per set which also ranks her No. 13 in the NCAA. Iosia is also second on the team with 20 service aces and she has recorded 24 blocks.
The Rainbow Wahine continue conference play this week at home with Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m. and UC Riverside on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 5:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center.
