The Children’s Discovery Center in Kakaako hosted for the first time a mochitsuki activity for keiki and their families Saturday morning.
Members of the Aiea Hongwanji Mission demonstrated and taught the mochi pounding activity to the children who also helped shape and taste the freshly made mochi.
“Well, the mochi pounding has been going on for centuries,” said center chairman and CEO Loretta Yajima. “It’s an art form and that’s why the elders from the Aiea Hongwanji are coming here to teach us so that the young children can pass on the tradition.”
The event is one of a series of cultural celebrations themed in conjunction with the center’s newest traveling exhibit “Hello From Japan!” that will close on Saturday, May 14.
