Kauai police seek public’s help with Kalaheo hit-and-run

Kauai police are continuing to investigate the death of 24-year-old Florentino Maipi, of Eleele, who was killed while walking on Halewili Road in Kalaheo last week.

Investigators are asking the public for assistance.

“Although the driver of the vehicle that first struck Maipi has been tentatively identified, we believe there could be at least two other vehicles that may have inadvertently struck the decedent after the initial impact,” said Acting Assistant Chief Paul Applegate. “If anyone was traveling on Halewili Road that night and may have seen or heard anything – no matter how insignificant it may seem – please report it to police immediately.”

At approximately 11:10 p.m. on Sunday, a police officer was driving home on Halewili Road in Kalaheo when he discovered a man’s body on the roadway.

According to a preliminary investigation, Maipa was walking in the eastbound lane of Halewili Road when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle.

The involved vehicle was not at the scene when police arrived.

Maipa was transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police initiated a search for the driver of the vehicle, and asked the public on Monday for any information about the incident.

Based on the debris from the crash, police narrowed down a description of the alleged vehicle as a silver Nissan Frontier truck, with four-wheel drive, and made between the years of 1998 and 2004.

On Tuesday, a man willingly came to the Lihue station and notified police that he could have been the driver involved.

Police recovered his vehicle, a 2004 silver Nissan Frontier with four-wheel drive, from his residence on Tuesday, and made an official arrest on Thursday morning.

According to police, Maipi was walking in the eastbound lane of Halewili Road on Sept. 30, when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle operated by David Curry of Kalaheo.

Curry was not at the scene when police arrived, and was later arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury or death.

He has since been released pending further investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing.

An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of Maipa’s death.
