John Valentine joins us on Living808 fresh off his win at the 41st Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.
The longtime musician was named Favorite Entertainer of the Year.
Despite a decades-long career and 21 CD releases, Valentine had never submitted his music for a Na Hoku Hanohano Award. So this year, his wife decided to do it for him.
Valentine says he was performing at the Waikiki Shell with Kalapana that night, so his wife attended the ceremony and texted him the news.
“I was really excited for my wife,” he told Living808 with a laugh. “She always wanted to go to the Hokus, and now she’d finally get to go, and then she’s on stage, accepting my award.”
Valentine credits his success to his family, as well as “because I’m in Kalapana and I’ve been performing with Henry Kapono, they kind of took me to the next level of being locally known, so I really thank them for that.”
