Island Scoops opens in former Bubbies location on University Ave.

Good news for those craving an ice cream fix in the University area.

Island Scoops has opened up in the space vacated by Bubbies Homemade Ice Cream and Desserts on University Avenue.

A pule and traditional Native Hawaiian blessing took place Tuesday morning.

Owner Ivan Lui-Kwan says the shop will continue to exclusively serve Bubbies ice cream.

“(Bubbies owner) Keith Robbins, over the past 30 years, has developed such an iconic company with such an attractive product that people just love his ice cream,” Lui-Kwan said. “I don’t think we’ll be having cakes or pies, but we’ll definitely be having sundaes and specialties in the mochi flavors, and the cups and cones.”

Hokupili Foundation, a Native Hawaiian nonprofit organization, is a major interest holder in Island Scoops.

Lui-Kwan says much of the shop’s proceeds will help fund scholarships, vocational training, and health and housing programs for Native Hawaiians.

“What we’re trying to do is create healthy communities and that encompasses the whole community, the whole person, whether it’s education, health, safe housing, clean streets and so forth,” he said.
