Inmates attacked several staffers at the Oahu Community Correctional Center Saturday night.

A spokesperson for the Public Safety Department says the assault happened at around 7:00 p.m.

She says the situation was quickly brought under control and inmates in the module were all placed on lockdown.

The lockdown was lifted Sunday morning and family visits were held as scheduled.

The OCCC staff involved in the incident were not seriously injured, but it is standard procedure to refer them for medical assessment as a precautionary measure.

It’s still unclear what prompted the attack, but Honolulu police have initiated a criminal investigation as well as an internal investigation.
