Inmate dies while in custody at OCCC

An inmate died while in custody this weekend at Oahu Community Correctional Center.

Public Safety officials say an inmate started having trouble breathing at around 5:50 a.m. on Sunday, July 10.

Medical staff responded to his cell and performed life-saving measures until Emergency Medical Services arrived.

The man stopped breathing, became unresponsive, and was pronounced dead at 6:25 a.m.

His next of kin has been notified.

An official cause of death is pending an autopsy by the medical examiner, but preliminary reports indicate no foul play.

As is procedure with all deaths in custody, the Honolulu Police Department was notified and an internal investigation is pending.

Officials say it had nothing to do with the power outage, air conditioning problems the facility experienced over the weekend.
