City and County of Honolulu

Online registration opens Tuesday, May 1, for the city’s Junior Lifeguard program.

Programs are held at four locations and are free to all registered participants ages 12 to 17.

The course will familiarize participants with ocean safety and beach rescue skills.  Topics include an introduction to water safety, first aid, CPR, and surf rescue techniques with an emphasis on beach and ocean awareness.

Applicants must be able to swim for 100 yards continuously with 100-percent effort. Qualifying swims will be held on the first day of each session.

Each location will have six sessions, June 4 to July 20. Each session is Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Programs will be held at Ehukai Beach Park, Ala Moana Beach Park, Makaha Beach Park, and Kalama Beach Park.

Kauai County

The Junior Lifeguard Program is open to youth ages 12 to 17 who can swim and run 100 yards nonstop.

The Keiki Lifeguard Program is available to children ages 8 to 11 that can swim and run 50 yards nonstop.

Online registration begins Tuesday, May 1, for free week-long programs that run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following dates:

  • June 4 to 8, at Salt Pond Beach
  • June 11 to 15, at Hanalei Bay
  • June 18 to 22, at Kalapaki Beach
  • June 25 to 29, at Salt Pond Beach
  • July 9 to 13, at Hanalei Bay
  • July 16 to 20, at Kalapaki Beach

Participants can register online on the county’s website here.

A computer for online registrations will also be available weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Fire Department headquarters located at the Lihue Civic Center Piikoi Building, 4444 Rice Street, Suite 315.

Registration is limited to 50 participants per site.

Participants will need to bring their own lunch, sunscreen and a towel to the training daily.

The State Junior Lifeguarding Championships will be hosted on Kauai.

Maui County

Openings for the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation’s free 2018 Summer Junior Lifeguard and Swim Camp programs are as follows:

Coach Spencer Shiraishi Memorial Pool programs

  • Session I: Junior Readiness (ages 8-10) from June 18 to 22
  • Session II: Junior Lifeguard (ages 11-14) from July 23 to Aug. 3

Register for either session from 3 to 4:30 p.m. weekdays starting May 21 at the pool in Kahului.

Program hours are 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays. Participants must take and pass a swim test.

Kihei Aquatic Center programs

  • Session I: Junior Minis (ages 7-9) from June 4-8
  • Session II: Junior Lifeguard (ages 10-14) from July 9 to 20 

Register for either session on April 28, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the pool in Kihei.

Program hours are 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays. Participants must take and pass a swim test.

The following swim camps will be held 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays through Fridays. Participants may be asked to do a swim assessment.

Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool Swim Camp for Level 3 swimmers will be held June 12 to 22. Register on May 19, from 8 to 9 a.m., at the pool in Wailuku.

New Wailuku Pool Swim Camp for Level 1 and 2 swimmers will be held June 26 to July 6. Register on May 5, from 8 to 9 a.m., at the pool in Wailuku.

Program and camp sign-ups are taken on a first-come, first-served basis and registration is accepted until spots are filled. Parents are asked to register in person.

The county’s Department of Fire and Public Safety’s Ocean Safety Bureau is holding its own Junior Lifeguard programs, open to ages 12 to 17, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as follows:

  • North, South, and West districts:
    • Session I: June 11 to 15
    • Session II: June 18 to 22
    • Session III: June 25 to 29
    • Session IV: July 2 to 6
    • Session V: July 9 to 13
    • Session VI: July 16 to 20

Registration forms will only be available on registration days: April 28, 9 to 11 a.m. (North and South districts report to the Kihei Aquatics Center, West District reports to the Lahaina Aquatics Center) OR May 12, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. (North and South districts report to the Kokua Pool, West District reports to the Lahaina Aquatics Center).

  • Hana: June 4 to 8. Registration forms are available at the Hana Youth Center.
  • Lanai: June 4 to 8. Registration forms are available at the Department of Parks and Recreation Office, Lanai and Lanai Recreation Center.
  • Molokai: June 4 to 8. Registration forms are available at the Department of Parks and Recreation Office, Molokai and Cooke Memorial Pool.

These five-day courses will familiarize students with ocean safety skills, and include an introduction to CPR, first aid, and rescue board techniques with an emphasis on ocean swimming, paddle boarding, and lifesaving skills.

Registration is first come, first served. Students must pass a swim test of 300 yards non-stop within 11 minutes. The age requirement applies as of June 2018, and a birth certificate copy is required.
