The local leaders of a union covering thousands of electrical workers in the islands have been placed on paid administrative leave.

That’s because the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) placed its Local 1260 in Honolulu under trusteeship.

In a statement posted online last Friday, international vice president John O’Rourke said the trusteeship was imposed to “prevent and correct financial issues within the local.”

On Monday, the head of the local union, Brian Ahakuelo told KHON2 he considers it an ordinary audit. “I have done nothing wrong. There have been no improprieties, and I am not concerned,” he said. “The process will be over when international completes its internal audit.”

For now, 19 members, including Ahakuelo, are on leave.

Local assistant business manager Russell Takemoto has been authorized to assume all duties until further notice.
