Honolulu City Council member proposes $5 bus pass

Councilman Brandon Elefante introduced a bill aimed at eliminating the $35 four-day bus pass.

Instead, he wants a $5 pass that would allow users to take unlimited rides.

He says this will streamline the process of getting on and off the bus because drivers won’t have to check the time stamps on transfers.

“In the old way you would pay for single use fare and possibly get a transfer but if you had two or three trips say for trips would cost you ten dollars but this will encourage people to use transit,” said City Councilmember Brandon Elefante.

“I think it would be good. I ride the bus all the way from Makaha all the way here, and I have to take it back so i think it would be great,” said Makaha resident Casey Rodgers.

There would still be a one-way cash option.

If approved, the bill would take effect July 1, 2016.
