A roadside memorial along Highway 11 is growing as more residents pay tribute to fallen Hawaii Police Department officer Bronson Kaliloa.
Erin Workman and her fiance, Kevin Hegent, placed flowers and a cross near the spot where Kaliloa was shot and killed Tuesday night.
They say it’s not just to honor Kaliloa, but the entire Hawaii Police Department.
“It’s a shame that an officer got killed in the line of duty, and that another officer was injured. That’s what scares me the most, because it can happen to anyone, and that’s why I’m so proud of our community to come together, that made this happen,” Hegent said.
Kaliloa was a 10-year veteran of the department. He leaves behind his wife and three small children.
“My daughter had wanted to come out and put flowers. She had seen somebody had come out and put a bouquet out here,” Workman said. “We just kind of brought stuff up and I mentioned to Kevin that we should maybe come put a cross out here. He deserves to be remembered, and his wife, his family, his friends deserve to have everybody’s thoughts and prayers with them.”
Workman and Hegent shared photos of the memorial and since then, others have stopped by to drop off flowers as well.
If you’d like to add to it, it’s near Hilo Coffee Mill.
