Health officials look to repeal aquaponics ban

The state Department of Health is repealing a law that’s been limiting restaurants and some farmers for 30 years. The department says it’s getting rid of the rule that bans restaurants from buying produce from aquaponics farms.

It says the reason for getting rid of the ban is based on national practices and on research that shows eating aquaponic produce is no riskier than consuming produce from soil-based farming.

The rule was put in place because of concerns the water used in aquaponic farming could become contaminated. Governor David Ige still needs to approve the repeal.
