LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its 2018 Beach Volleyball All-America Team on Thursday with the Rainbow Wahine top pair of Emily Maglio and Ka’iwi Schucht earning recognition.
It’s the first such honor for Schucht (Sr., Escondido, Calif.), who became the ninth All-American in program history. Maglio (Jr. Coquitlam, Canada), meanwhile, earned All-America status for the second time (also in 2016 as a freshman). Maglio is the first Rainbow Wahine to earn All-American honors in both indoor and beach within the same school year.
Earlier this month the duo was named the Big West Pairs Team of the Year. Maglio and Schucht proved a driving force in UH’s record-breaking season in which the team won 37 matches, claimed its third straight Big West title, and finished third in the NCAA Championship. The pair played together in all 42 matches, finishing with a 35-6 dual mark. The 35 dual wins set a new single-season school record, as did their 25-match win streak.
The duo started the year as the No. 2 pair before moving to the top flight where they won 25 of their first 26 matches. The duo went 17-6 versus ranked opponents.
Schucht leaves as UH’s all-time leader in dual match wins (94) and one of just three players in program history to crack 100 career overall wins (103). Maglio ranks third all-time in dual wins (83) and tied for fourth in overall wins (87).
Maglio and Schucht join just seven other pairs across the country on the AVCA All-America Team. Six other players earned honorable mention. UH has had at least one All-America citation in six of the seven years of the program’s existence.
