It’s official. Hawaii Pacific University is selling its Hawaii Loa campus in Windward Oahu.

We first told you back in April that HPU was considering the idea. Now, we know who’s buying it.

The university announced Tuesday it has entered into a Purchase and Sale Agreement with Castle Medical Center, which involves a lengthy review process.

Once the sale is complete, HPU would remain on the property for three to five years while it fully transitions to downtown Honolulu.

“It’s actually part of the execution of our campus master plan, which was created back in 2014. That called for consolidating our operations in the downtown area, so we’ll be moving the classes we have at Hawaii Loa into downtown,” said HPU communications director Richard Rapoza.

The Hawaii Loa campus currently houses the university’s programs for nursing, social work, public health, natural sciences, and computer sciences.

“The sale is unlikely to affect any current HPU students, and we intend to complete our move in a way that is as seamless as possible for students, faculty, staff, and the community,” university president Geoffrey Bannister said in a statement. “We are pleased to have identified a buyer like Castle Medical Center that will continue to use the property to provide for the needs of the windward community.”

“We have some planners who have been looking at available space in downtown. There’s actually quite a bit of space available, so they’re looking at a number of scenarios. It’s a fairly complex process, because we do need to move labs, so we need appropriate space for that, as well as classrooms, offices, and other support areas,” Rapoza said. “So they’re looking into a lot of different possibilities in the downtown area, principally within walking distance of Aloha Tower.”

The school purchased Aloha Tower Marketplace in 2011 and students first moved in last fall.

In addition to living spaces, the building touts several retail and dining outlets, as well as learning facilities and gathering places for the university and the community.
