Looking for handmade gifts this holiday season?
Products made by Hawaii inmates will be featured in the Hawaii Correctional Industries Holiday Showcase Sale.
Shoppers can browse one-of-a-kind items, like handcrafted wooden bowls, clocks, quilts, even furniture.
“The items from our wood shop generally are the most popular, a lot of koa items,” said Robert Mahaffey, Hawaii Correctional Industries administrator. “We made some sushi boards with some handmade chopsticks, and some handmade surf boards that can be used as decor on your wall.”
Fresh produce from the prison farm in Waiawa will also be on sale.
The program is currently teaching roughly 126 inmates valuable life and job skills.
“They’re learning how to work with wood. They’re learning how to sew. They’re learning how to do a job that you may get on the outside so that when they do release to the community, they have a much better chance of getting a job,” explained Mahaffey.
The showcase sale will take place Friday, Dec. 15, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hawaii Correctional Industries sales showroom at 801 Dillingham Boulevard, on the second floor above Max of Manila Restaurant.Click here for more information.
