One of Oahu’s most popular attractions is temporarily closed.

The city Department of Parks and Recreation closed Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday due an electrical malfunction.

Officials say the pump at the nature preserve’s comfort station needs electricity to operate.

It services both the lower and upper levels at Hanauma Bay, which means the entire park needs to be closed to ensure that a spill doesn’t take place.

No spill has occurred, officials stress.

An announcement was made to visitors and refunds were issued.

“Everyone had to get out of the water for a maintenance issue and then they repeated that again, and we started getting out of the water, tried to go to the bathroom, but they wouldn’t let you into the bathroom. They were closed then,” said Jessica Tillett, who is visiting from Sydney.

The park is expected to reopen Thursday.
