Governor David Ige signed a bill into law on Thursday aimed at helping family caregivers.

The new law, which takes effect July 2017, will require hospitals to provide instructions to family caregivers when a patient is discharged.

“Is for the hospital staff to sit down with the patient and the caregiver, go over the kinds of support that are going to be needed at home, make sure they have a chance to ask questions to make sure that when the patient gets home the caregiver can manage their care appropriately,” said Gerry Silva of AARP.

According to AARP, there are more than 154,000 unpaid family caregivers in the state.
