Former local football stars projected as 1st round selections in NFL draft

ESPN National Football League draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. released his latest mock draft Thursday, featuring two Hawai’i high school graduates turned elite college defenders.

Punahou alum and Oregon defensive end DeForest Buckner is tabbed my Kiper Jr. as the 3rd overall pick to the San Diego Chargers. Buckner piled up 17 tackles for a loss and ranked 14th in the nation with 10.5 sacks for the Ducks in 2015.

Joining Buckner as a potential first round selection is former Saint Louis Crusader and Boise State outside linebacker/defensive end Kamalei Correa.

Correa is mocked to the Arizona Cardinals with the 29th pick.

The junior had 11 of his 39 tackles for a loss in 2015, with 7 sacks and 3 forced fumbles.

The NFL draft will be held April 28-30.
