Firefighter injured after 30-foot fall during Diamond Head rescue

News

A Honolulu firefighter was injured during a rescue operation at Diamond Head Friday morning.

It happened at around 9:50 a.m. near the top of the trail at Diamond Head State Monument.

Officials say crews were loading a patient, who suffered a medical emergency, into a helicopter rescue basket.

As the basket was being lifted by HFD’s Air 1 helicopter, it hit a utility pole, causing the firefighter inside to fall approximately 30 feet to the ground.

The patient remained in the basket and was transported to a landing zone without injury.

Personnel rushed to the firefighter’s side and tended to his injuries until Air 1 returned and flew him to a landing zone.

He was treated and taken to the hospital. Officials say he was alert and in stable condition.

Fire Chief Manuel Neves says the department will investigate what happened.
