Fire crews respond to high rise fire

A fire broke out in a 21-story apartment building this morning in Moiliili.

One man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

It happened at 10 a.m. at the Rainbow Place Condominiums on Kuilei Street and quickly grew to a 3-alarm blaze originating from the top floor.

The fire department sent 16 units and 58 firefighters.

The fire was brought under control at 10:40 a.m. and was extinguished just before 11.

The man who lives in the unit involved was not home at the time of the fire.

Thankfully, his neighbor was home at the time and was able to pull the alarm and wake up others in the building.

Daniel Kellarney and his wife were getting ready to leave their house for the beach.

It was minutes before 10 a.m. when he went out to his lanai to grab one last thing.

“I thought I had smelled some papers burning, so I looked out to see if I could find what was going on,” he said.

He noticed black smoke coming from his neighbors unit.

“That’s when I immediately ran over to [my neighbors] apartment and knocked on his door, rang the doorbell to see if he was okay— and no one answered,” Kellarney said.

He pulled the fire alarm and called 911.

“We grabbed everything we thought was most important to us in our life and we just left,” he said.

Kellarney has lived at Rainbow Place Condominiums for 10 years.

“We’re not sure what’s left of our apartment, but we hope everyone is okay and that’s the main thing.”

One man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Emergency Medical Services says the 83-year-old man was able to evacuate the building without coming into contact with smoke or the fire but collapsed once he made it across the street.

The Red Cross is assisting the individuals including Daniel and his wife who’ve been displaced due to the fire.

The fire is currently under investigation and damage estimates are not yet available. The building did have a working smoke alarm system but it did not have fire sprinklers.
