Female surfers of all ages hit Kuhio Beach this weekend for a friendly competition benefiting a good cause.
The China Uemura Wahine Surfing Classic is in its 20th year, and this year, proceeds are going to the Sex Abuse Treatment Center, a program of the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.
“This is the first year the women ever had small waves but, you know what, I didn’t have one complaint from the girls,” Uemura said. “The girls all said ‘Uncle, you cannot bring waves. As long as we enjoying ourselves, that’s all count.'”
Uemura said he plans to change the competition next year by making it a team format.
