A tenured University of Hawaii at Manoa professor has pleaded not guilty to federal allegations of possessing and distributing child pornography.

Beei Huan Chao, 61, was arrested Wednesday by the FBI. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

After appearing in court Thursday, Chao was released on a $50,000 unsecured bond. He will need to post a $250,000 secured bond within 30 days.

The University of Hawaii says Chao was placed on administrative leave as of Thursday and is cooperating with authorities.
