Family speaks for first time since police officer’s wife, infant killed in fire

The family of a woman and baby killed in a house fire in Kaimuki is speaking out for the first time since the tragedy.

Connie Wharton and her infant daughter, Sophia, died Wednesday morning when a fire broke out at their home on Luakaha Street near Kilauea District Park.

We’re told they are the family of a Honolulu police officer.

In a statement, a family spokesperson said:

”This is a very tragic time for our family. We would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support and condolences. Connie was a loving and caring mother, wife, daughter and sister and Sophia brought such joy to our entire family.”

Neighbors reported hearing an explosion, along with loud popping sounds.

Connie Wharton’s body was later discovered the garage, where fire officials say investigators found three propane tanks.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
