An elderly Oahu couple will get to live out their final years together.

KHON2 first introduced you to Noboru and Elaine Kawamoto in 2016.

They were staying at an assisted living facility when his health started to deteriorate.

He needed to be transferred to a care home in Kaneohe.

His wife wasn’t allowed to stay with him because she’s not on medicaid.

So the couple sued the state, and Thursday a settlement was reached.

“They are together,” said Jeff Portnoy, the Kawamoto’s attorney. “Thanks to the cooperation of the state they were reunited several months ago. They’re living out their senior years hopefully healthy and happy.”

The Kawamotos were recently reunited after lawmakers amended the statute allowing private pay married couples to live in the same medicaid home.
