The Hawaii State Department of Education held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new East Kapolei Middle School on Thursday.

The school is located across Maunakapu Street from The Salvation Army Kroc Center Hawaii.

The $59 million first phase for West Oahu’s new middle school includes an administration building, library, cafeteria, a music building, covered and open play courts, and classrooms.

The second phase includes health and physical education facilities as well as two additional classroom buildings, pending additional funding.

The 21st-century learning campus is designed to serve students in sixth to eighth grades and scheduled to open for the 2020-2021 School Year.

Lawmakers hope that this school will ease student population in current Ewa and Kapolei middle schools.

“This project means a lot because in our Ewa, Kapolei area, Waipahu Complex areas, we are at capacity,” said Rep. Ty Cullen, D-39. “We’ve in the legislature, taken in the past few years to actually address the capacity with such funding.”

The East Kapolei Middle School is located at 91-3257 Kualakai Parkway.
