As Hurricane Olivia heads toward the islands, residents need to stay prepared and informed.
“We can’t let our guard down,” disaster response expert Ed Teixeira tells KHON2.
Teixeira warns that the wind speeds may be chaotic during the passage of the storm.
“This is a real serious storm,” Teixeira says. “We can expect some wind effects particularly in communities that are located in the low mountains ranges in all the Hawaii islands.”
Just a few weeks ago, Hurricane Lane brought heavy rain to the east side of the Big Island. The west side of the island saw more wind impacts.
Teixeira says it brought back memories from 2000 when Hawaii saw the remnants of a tropical depression match up an upper level low.
