Departments of Health, Human Services hold job fair at State Capitol


The Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Human Services (DHS) co-hosted a job fair at the Hawaii State Capitol Friday.

These are two of the largest departments in the state — DOH employs 2,700 workers and DHS employs 2,000 workers on every major island.

The job fair featured informational display tables staffed by employees from various divisions and branches.

DOH: Adult Mental Health Division; Hawaii State Hospital and Environmental Resources Office; Child & Adolescent Mental Health Division; Developmental Disabilities Division; Alcohol & Drug Abuse Division; and Office of Health Care Assurance.

DHS: Benefits, Employment and Support Services Division, Statewide Branch; Social Services Division, Child Welfare Services Branch; Division of Vocational Rehabilitation; and the Hawaii Public Housing Authority.

“This is the first time we’ve done a joint-type job fair like this,” said Ian Greene, chief of the DOH Human Resources Office Recruitment and Examination. “I think the job market right now, it’s definitely a market for people that are seeking employment.

“We have all kinds of positions, from blue collar, white collar, to professional-type jobs, so it includes the whole myriad and gamut of professions,” he added.

Temenia Lott is a licensed practical nurse who recently moved to Hawaii from California.

“The two booths I’ve been to, they’ve been very, very helpful, very nice. I’m here filling out an application now. Hopefully, well I’m going to claim I’m going to get work,” Lott said. “Nursing is a growing industry. There’s a shortage of nurses in some states — I believe this is one of them, and if you like helping people, this is the field for you.”
