Breast density is a reflection of the amount of milk producing and support tissues in the breast and is more prominent in younger patients, generally becoming less dense over time. Dense breasts are common and are not considered abnormal.

However, according to Dr. Laeton Pang from Cancer Center of Hawaii, women with dense breasts have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer and may be diagnosed with more advanced disease as breast density may prevent the radiologist from detecting the breast cancer when it’s small.
