With great fanfare, Nordstrom’s store in Ala Moana Center’s new Ewa Wing Expansion opened its doors to the public Friday morning.
The festivities began with a Beauty Bash event earlier in the morning, before the store even opened.
Customers gathered outside the front entrance for makeup lessons, free samples and giveaways, and music.
“We’re so excited. We’re thrilled,” said Nordstrom representative Pamela Lopez. “We have people here from 5 a.m. this morning so we’re thrilled that they’re here.”
A tradition blessing, led by Kahu Kordell, was held at 9:15 a.m. and, after a store-wide countdown, the doors opened promptly at 9:30 a.m. Employees lined the aisles, welcoming customers with cheers and applause.
This new location is three stories tall and is about the same size as the old store, but with upgrades like charging stations for your phone and more food options.
Store officials say 600 employees have been working tirelessly to make this day happen.
“We’re particularly proud of the team we have here and to be able to open this new store, which is our latest and greatest thinking, we just couldn’t be more proud and pleased, and now we’re anxious to hear from customers what they think,” said co-president Blake Nordstrom.
“It’s been a long journey going back to 1966, when we partnered with Liberty House to run their shoe department, and then we were able to get a free-standing shoe store in the mall in the late ’90s, and then a (Nordstrom) Rack and then in 2008, they opened a new wing and we opened a full-line store,” Nordstrom added. “The owners of the mall redeveloped this wing and we thought, as retail is evolving, we had a chance to do something really special here.”
