Cosmonaut returns photo to Ariyoshi family

Governor David Ige hosted a ceremony to proclaim March 4 as International Space Station 55th Expedition “Hawaii” Mission Day.

Oleg Artemyev, a Russian cosmonaut who broke with tradition to name his mission “Hawaii,” was provided items to carry to the International Space Station.

Among those items was a copy of the Ariyoshi family photo that Ellison Onizuka took with him in the Challenger before the shuttle exploded shortly after takeoff.

The original photo was among Onizuka’s possessions that survived the explosion. The items were discovered underwater two months later.

Artemyev presented the photo to Governor Ariyoshi, completing Onizuka’s mission to take the photo into space to honor the first family.
