HONOLULU – The Coast Guard rescued a 64-year-old man from a vessel taking on water six miles east of Niihau, Saturday.
A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Kauai towed the 33-foot fishing vessel safely to Port Allen after it was located by an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point.
At 10:02 a.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a radio call via VHF-FM Channel 16 from the master of the fishing vessel reporting it was taking on water due to a leak in the bilge.
The Hercules crew located the vessel at 11 a.m. approximately five miles east of Niihau and vectored in the RB-M crew who arrived on scene at 11:55 p.m.
The mariner did not require medical attention.
Weather conditions on scene at the time of the tow were reportedly 23 mph winds and seas up to 6 feet.
