A lot of excitement at the Honolulu Zoo on Saturday, not for any animal, but for the zoo’s other attraction—a new playground.

The city and the Honolulu Zoological Society officially opened the zoo’s new Explorer Dome.

The city says the society raised $75,000 for the new playground equipment intended for ages six and up.

The mayor says its estimated nationwide children spend 9.6 hours per week before a screen, compared to about three hours in 1995, so hopefully, this will help get them outside.

“Down here, at this Explorer Dome, they play with each other, use their muscles, develop and be outside and that’s what the Explorer Dome is all about,” Mayor Caldwell said.
