Wednesday the City Council will consider a proposal to extend the work day for lifeguards on Oahu.

Right now most lifeguards work from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

A resolution is asking the city to extend those hours citing an increase in drowning and dangerous surf conditions.

Many current and former lifeguards have come out in favor of the plan.

The city has pointed out changing the schedule could cost millions and will need to go through the lifeguards union, HGEA, before going into effect.
