The Central East Maui Little Leaguers topped South Korea in the international intermediate division title game in Livermore, California 5-1 Sunday.
The West region and United States 12 and 13-year-old champions jumped on Korea in the 1st inning, getting a three-run rally started with Tiger Caulford’s RBI double scoring Dawson Tokishi.
South Korea’s only damage came in the top of the 4th inning with a solo home run by Kyumin Kim.
Maui extended their lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the 6th, capped off by an RBI double by Reyn Okita to score Isiah Souza.
In the top of the 7th, East Central Maui reliever Haku Dudoit escaped a bases-loaded jam by striking out Han Lee with a 77 mile-per-hour fastball.
The win marks the fifth-ever Little League organization world championship for the state of Hawai’i, joining HIlo’s Senior Leaguers in 2003, Ewa Beach Little Leaguers in 2005, Waipio Little Leaguers in 2008, and Hilo’s Senior Leaguers in 2011.
